Do any of you become giddy when you eat a lot of garlic? There is this restaurant I go to called Cucina Cucina where they have this bread you spread roasted garlic on and cambozola cheese. It is addictive and every time I eat it, I feel really giddy for some reason. I would eat it more if it didn't make me smell so bad.

I love it too. Recently I bought some garlic stuffed olives at the local Middle Eastern Grocery. Green olives stuffed with whole cloves. They are addictive. I don't know how many I ate, but it was more than 10 in one sitting. For several days I've had wind, dry throat, raw sinuses, dehydration. Had a suspicion it might be due to the garlic so I searched and found you guys. Hmmm...

I'm also here because of a search on garlic poisoning! I frightened myself to death last night - I honestly thought I was going to die.
Basically, I've had an awful cold for nearly two weeks now and I had the idea of taking some garlic to try and shift it. I took 4 cloves raw on a cheese sandwich at 18:00. By 21:00 I was barely able to stay awake and by 22:00 I was sweating profusely and shivering & shaking uncontrollably. My vision went blurred and I felt totally 'off my head'. By midnight I was running a temperature of 104 and my wife was pleading with me to call an ambulance.
I didn't sleep at all and still feel dreadful now nearly 24 hours later. I love garlic and can't quite understand what happened. Any ideas?

Just as a thought,
My family and friends went to Turkey for my brothers wedding. We all stayed in the same hotel and largely had the same breakfast as each other. My sister and myself took to eating raw garlic crushed on bread with jam in the morning. Out of 18 people who didnt we where the only two not to come down with some kind of food poisoning. We also had a contest for the most garlicy meal avilable.

I to am addicted to garlic, but use it in two ways.
If eating for medicinal purposes it has to be eaten in a crushed form either with or without food but certainly never heated. This destroyes the Allicin. It is the crushing action that produces the oil that contains most of this. As with most fresh food the sooner its eaten the better.
Other than that i just use it in vast quantities to flavour food.
This unlike raw tends to result in wind and a dry mouth the next day.
Whatever though its just the best!

I finally figured out I too have reactions. Mainly respiratory. After eating at a Bucca De Beppos last night and having wonderful Fresheta Garlic bread. Woke up at 2am, sinuses plugged, throat dry. After morning shower blew nose...full of blood. all day today my nose has been running away from me and my face is ruddy from a Rosacea flair up. I am sure I will have fever blisters / cold sores in a day or two. This is the third time it has happened after heavy garlic laden meals. Each time before I think I am catching a cold. However, 24hrs later...symptoms are gone. Comments?

The bloating and gas following the consumption of large amounts of garlic,
has a name;it's called Herkesheimers Response. It is the result of the "die off
of intestional flora." Hence its use in
some countries as a substitute for antibiotics. In Russia, it's poor man's
penicillin.

Believe me,I have had reactions with garlic overdose. I cook with a lot of garlic and everytime I have food with garlic, I instantly get headaches and dizzy. I think it does affect my sugar levels thus the feeling of dizziness.....
